ASTM A453 665, is the standard specification for high-temperature bolting, with expansion coefficients comparable to austenitic stainless steels. This specification is pretty diverse as it covers mechanical and chemical requirements of 5 grades of bolting with 12 classes of yield strength ranging from 50 – 120 ksi for the use in high temperature service such as pressure vessels and valve flanges in both inch and metric products.
Considered as a UNS S66545 material, grade 665 has both unique chemical and mechanical requirements, and may have a minimum tensile strength of 170-155ksi, and a maximum hardness of 41 HRC.
Per ASTM A453, grade 665 bolts shall be marked with the grade symbol “665 and its corresponding class“ and also a manufacturer mark, of which Lightning Bolt’s mark is “LBS”.
ASTM A453 material requires special processing and is not intended for general purpose applications. In addition, for design temperatures above 800 °F [427 °C], material not stress-rupture tested shall be permanently stamped “NR”. Grade 660 Class D and Grade 668 do not require stress-rupture and shall be stamped NR.
Common manufacturing stages include heat treatment, threading, cutting, chamfering, stamping, and possibly Xylan and PTFE coating or plating.
